Heading for the rocks…
The production crew behind the new season three of the UK Being Human series which airs in about a month's time have been running snippets of video showing Annie waiting in purgatory. She was cast there at the end of season two. Characters, George, Nina and Mitchell finished the season glued to a flickering TV set which was showing fuzzy and blurry images of Annie in distress.
To warm up the followers for the upcoming season the snippets/vignettes are being released almost daily as an inducement to come back for the start of the new season. The idea is to slowly warm up the audience which is unlike previous years where they have had a live preview showing.
I am not sure how other RT blog readers have reacted to the vignettes but to me they are becoming a tad repetitive as very little changes and we have had no major revelations to make you want to come back to YouTube for more.
In the world today an educational theorist will tell you an audience comes back to watch a show because they are going to learn something new about a character, or learn something from a show they can use or incorporate in their lives while being entertained. The previous series of Being Human had cast and crew video diaries and allowed the viewers to learn something new about their idols...this year's change of format is NOT that engaging and we have not yet learnt anything new.
I don't want to sound ungrateful but the long term faithful who have been tweeting on Twitter seem to have come to a similar conclusion. A small gang of them are wanting to send written protests to BBC3 about the lack of blog updates, live viewings etc. Having made heaps of money from selling the rights of this show to the USA SYFY channel, fans hoped there would be more money spent on making something more whiz bang than we currently have.
Having just left the UK in the grip of poor economic conditions, poor weather, snow and sub-zero temperatures it's a shame to see long term fans actually suggesting the current situation is making them "officially depressed." Since, returning to Oz where we are having the complete opposite in economic growth and weather...Well guess what, instead of depression I can list myself as feeling massively disappointed.
The promise of the new show called Becoming Human made by the same team, certainly doesn't inspire me to want to come back to see younger versions of the Being Human cast replicate the same or similar series but for a younger demographic. Where is the "learning" in that?
Barry Pilling was, in the last few months, releasing video diaries by the cast and things seemed fine like in previous years, but releases became infrequent and then we've come to the point we have reached now. It's not Barry's fault by any means and he is working very hard to inspire the followers to come back but someone at BBC3 is steering the ship in a very obtuse direction. BBC3's flagship show seems to be heading for the rocks at the moment...let's hope the course changes soon!
