RUSSELL TOVEY - No.433

What would you tell the American actors doing the remake of Being Human?

Put weight on and don't wear make up...
Don't bother learning your lines and mumble...
Just be terrible as possible...
Look down the lens of the camera as often as you can!
Don't copy what we're doing, find your own path, buy the box set...and other helpful hints like that!

The SyFy Channel remake of Being Human, about a vampire, a ghost and a werewolf trying to live a normal life, has begun filming in Montreal. This amuses me for several reasons. First, the American remake is being made in Canada and that the nearly pitch-perfect series is being remade at all.

The stars of "Being Human" offer their advice to the American cast

By Lauren Davis, Jul 28, 2010.

Syfy's remake of Being Human already underway, we asked the BBC's vampire, werewolf, and ghost for their advice to their American counterparts. They also tease what's to come and discuss whether Being Human could ever crossover with Doctor Who.

We caught up with Being Human stars Aiden Turner (Mitchell), Russell Tovey (George), Lenora Crichlow (Annie), and Sinead Keenan (Nina), as well as creator Toby Whithouse at Comic Con. We asked them about their thoughts on the American version of the show, and what advice they have for the cast:

What would you tell the actors who are playing [your counterparts]?

Tovey: Put weight on. Don't wear makeup.

Whithouse: Don't bother learning the lines, 'cause you guys don't.

Crichlow: Mumble.

Tovey: Yeah, don't learn the lines. Just be as terrible as possible.

Turner: Look down the lens of the camera as much as possible.

What would you tell them about your characters?

George: Nothing. Find out for yourself.

Mitchell: Do the homework, you'll be along.

Annie: We did.

Mitchell: And stop calling me.

George: We did. We did everything ourselves, so.

Nina: Get the box set!

Annie: But we're really supportive.

George: Don't try and copy what we're doing. Find your own path.

[They pause, then begin laughing]

Annie: Print that.

George: It's a joke. I think we would say enjoy.

In all seriousness, they were pleased Syfy has decided to adapt the show:

Tovey: We're very proud Syfy is doing it. It builds up the brand of Being Human…. We're pleased, because hopefully people will know — well, people do know we exist — but hopefully more people will know we exist, because they're making comparisons in everything I've read about it. And I don't know about you guys, but in everything I've read about it, they've said the English version is there and the Americans are doing a version of the English version.

Crichlow: So we've been acknowledged and appreciated.

Tovey: We've been nodded at. We've been given a nod.

British audiences have already seen the second season of Being Human, but the cast gave some insight into what's to come for American audiences:

Tovey: I think if you've fallen in love with the characters, which a lot of people have, thankfully, you're going to just follow these characters on their next adventure. The first season finished in such a dramatic way that was really startling and shocking and so a lot of people are intrigued to see what happened to Nina after she had been scratched.

Crichlow: The implications of the scratch.

Tovey: And George, discovering that George's friends are a ghost and a vampire, the implications of that. And these characters sort of go off on their tangents.

Turner: Mitchell has to sort of pick up the pieces after Herrick's been killed. He fills almost solely responsible I guess for what's happened. So he has to look after the household and make that no harm comes to his friends, and the only way he can sort of do that is to step into Herrick's shoes almost. And unknowingly, he does that. And that kind of interferes with his road to recovery and all the other things that he's trying to juggle. So from Series 1 to Series 2 it's just this progression straight in for him, his continued journey to be the better person and try and maintain his friendships and all the important things in his life.

They also teased a bit of what audiences can expect from Season 3, which is now filming in Cardiff:

Crichlow: Season 1, the threat was the vampires. Season 2, the threat was the humans. Season 3, the threat is from within…. But what does that mean? Within what? You know, within yourself…

Tovey: Within reason…

Crichlow: Within reason, within the cupboard, within the house…

Tovey: We don't know. It's a mystery. But it's going to be good.

Now that the show's action is moving from Bristol to Cardiff, we couldn't resist asking: Is there any chance that the supernatural foursome will run into the Doctor? Whithouse had our answer:

The thing about Being Human is that Being Human takes place in our world. That's what we've always tried to do. There are no plans for werewolves and vampires being revealed to the people of the world in Being Human, because the moment that happens, it stops being in our world and becomes in a different world. And with Doctor Who, Doctor Who exists in the Doctor Who world in that the world knows about the existence of aliens, they get invaded every Christmas. So that's a very different world. Being Human is much more rooted in our world. So I don't think it could happen.

Well, actually this ComicCon outing one was experienced by my wife April. You see, while I was waiting in another line, my darling wife became really excited after looking through the event's program book and said that she had to go and see something and that if she didn't go right now, she would miss it. Being a typical husband I asked, "What is it?" Being a typical wife she responded, "It's a surprise." If you’re married then you understand this type of communication (or lack off) all too well.

Anyway, to make a long story short, my wife had discovered that a signing by the cast of the BBC series, "Being Human", was going on at that very moment just one floor below us. Such was the case with literally everything that happens at Comic Con, there is at least a dozen cool things happening at the same time, and unless you are some kind of savant and can read through a hundred page program book, and retain the info, you are likely to miss something.

Just before my son and I reached the front of the line for "Ghost Adventures", my wife appeared just outside the queue, smiling that wonderful smile of hers with a signed card from the cast of "Being Human" in hand. Granted, I was a little sad that I hadn't gotten to meet them, but at least she got to, and I was about to meet the "Ghost Adventures" cast and she wasn't going to be able to. Fair is fair. April commented that the entire cast was just "unbelievably beautiful" and were "really friendly and easy to talk to".

Tovey has 'no idea' about 'Torchwood'

Thursday, July 29 2010, 15:08 BST

By Morgan Jeffery

Russell Tovey, while attending ComicCon San Diego 2010, has admitted that he has "no idea" if he will be joining the cast of Torchwood.

Speaking at the
Being Human panel at Comic-Con, the actor responded to speculation that he would continue his Doctor Who role of Midshipman Frame in the spinoff.

"[I have] no idea. Genuinely no idea." he told fans. "There's been lots of rumours. I did that scene [in
The End of Time] and I never really thought anything of it."

Tovey's brief appearance in David Tennant's final
Who story saw him encounter Torchwood lead Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) in an alien bar.

"To be honest, I've never really watched
Torchwood," he revealed. "But since [that scene] I've been bombarded with messages asking 'Are you gonna be Jack's lover?'. I genuinely don't know."

Tovey also explained that he was “proud” that the SyFy network were remaking Being Human for the US. A new version of the supernatural drama would benefit the original series.

"We're very proud Syfy is doing it," he explained. "It builds up the brand of
Being Human."

He added: "People do know we exist, but hopefully more people will know [now], because they're making comparisons in everything I've read about it. They've [always] said the English version is there and the Americans are doing a version of [it]."

Tovey also had some advice for the cast of the US version, which includes former
Smallville star Sam Witwer.

"Don't try and copy what we're doing," he said. "Find your own path."

The US
Being Human is scheduled to air in 2011. A third series of the original show is currently filming in Cardiff.

Allons-y Allonso!

Being Human star Russell Tovey is set to return to the Whoniverse this Christmas.

The actor will reprise the role of midshipman Alonso Frame, last seen in the 2007 Doctor Who festive special Voyage Of The Damned. In the episode he helped the Doctor prevent the interstellar cruiser Titanic from crashing into Buckingham Palace.

Speaking exclusively to TV Towers, Russell refused to reveal any details about his part in The End Of Time, but did confirm he was excited to be a part of 10th Doctor, David Tennant’s swan song.

"How can you not be happy to be in Doctor Who?" he said. "It's Harry Potter for TV! To go back to it was great.

"Russell T. Davies was writing the finals and he wanted to write about characters which he felt people liked and people seem to like my midshipman Frame, so he's brought him back for a 'goodbye'.

"David Tennant's final episodes are going to be historical," the actor added. "I think they're going to be huge."

Doctor Who: The End Of Time Part 1 will air on Christmas Day on BBC1 at 6pm, followed by Part 2 on New Year's Day at 6.40pm.

Various messages from Russell Tovey IMDb chat:

gilliard: I just watched the Dr. Who episode "Voyage of the Damned". Russell had a fairly good role, but every time he was on screen, I would think "Wow, he's really, really hot!"...so...HURRAY for our side!

Dawlishlad: OK this sounds really sad and I'm not a stalker or maniac but here goes...Since seeing Russell Tovey in Being Human, I've had this irrational attraction towards him, one of my friends has met him a few times, so I suggested he set up a stealthy drink but hasn't seen him for ages so that was a non-starter...Then I was out a few weeks ago and he was in the same bar and I really wanted to say 'hello' but realised how stupid that would be...hmmm, so bearing in mind this is completely ridiculas and adults shouldn't have silly crushes on people they see on TV...how am I going to get to meet him...God that sounds insane...but hey!

DrakeMadEyeWeasley: Attitude article and he is definatley gay and in a relationship. Seems very relaxed and comfortable about his sexuality, and doesn't want it to be a big deal. It is a shame that more young gay men in the public eye don't feel so secure.

rastablasta: Yeah he is gay. Also his boyfriend is a policeman.

Dj Finker: I know his parents and Russell very well, and all his family are completly comfortable with his sexuallity, his mum loves it to death because she doesn't stop talking about what Russell's been up to.

nina_glyndwr: Ah, drat. And here's me hoping I'd have a chance...*sigh*. He is just SO DAMNED CUTE. A sort of Matt Damon sort of face, a nice figure, and a damned great actor. I am now going to go to a darkened room and cry...*sigh*

hbrackett: Boy, do I agree. I'd wrestle an alligator just to have a beer and a 15 minute conversation with him. I'm gay, so I have a 1 in 3 billion shot. A movie idea: I'd like to see Russell in something with Simon Pegg. Maybe a hot tub.

Nina was upset when he turned her into a werewolf. Women eh?

Diane Butler

From: The Courier Mail Australia July 29, 2010

LAST Friday night that movie Sex Lies and Videotape was on one of the Foxtel movie channels, can't remember which one now, and I was watching it when I got home and thinking how many newspaper headlines it's been responsible for.

An annoying number, is how many. Hard to believe the same guy who directed it went on to make all those Ocean's films.

I won't be watching a movie tonight though. No. I'll be watching the second-last episode of Being Human. Or I would be if I hadn't already seen it. This one tonight is the championship quarter. Everything's been leading to this point and it meets -- exceeds -- all expectations.

A quick recap, but look, you should never think you can't just pick up a series in the middle of it, or indeed at the start of the second-last episode. You totally can. Television is made to be accessible. They want people to watch it.

So, Being Human: Mitchell the vampire, George the werewolf, Annie the ghost. Live in a share house, all pretty normal, you know, given, until a crazy Catholic priest called Kemp decides to kill them and anyone like them. He looks exactly like Christopher Lee, I'm sure it's not a coincidence. Maybe not as handsome.

Anyway, he ropes in a suggestible doctor, a geneticist called Lucy, who ends up in a relationship with Mitchell, only it slips her mind to mention to him that she and the mad priest are going to try to persuade George to go along to their scary laboratory the next time there's a full moon and see if they can't "cure" him of being a werewolf. So last week's ended with a huge and suspicious fire and one of the most important side characters, a very old charismatic vampire called Ivan, winding up dead. No, I didn't think they could just die like that either.

Now you're up to where we are, which is Ivan's vampire wife Daisy, who looks very young and hip for somebody who'd been married 69 years, hunting down anyone she thinks was connected to the fire, and some who weren't connected in any way at all, and draining the blood out of them. George's ex-girlfriend Nina is back in his life this week, not sure why, because she was the one who told him to move on, and he well and truly has.

And while one can never really know what went on between two people, Nina was fairly upset when he turned her into a werewolf. Women eh?

Of the cast, Russell Tovey as George is the standout. He's just been in Little Dorrit -- he was John Chivery, the lovely gate keep at the debtors' prison where nutty old Mr Dorrit lived. Vastly different here obviously, and it's been great seeing him take his range out for a run.

And I tell you what, there's an excellent case made against daylight saving here tonight. It's an angle I've never considered either.
