Openly-gay actor Russell Tovey has given his support to Transport For London’s teen road safety campaign.
The Being Human actor has been recruited by TFL as one of its latest Road Safety Ambassadors. He appears alongside co-star Leonora Crichlow in a series of short videos aimed to raise young people’s awareness of road safety.
The campaign was set up in 2000 with the intention of reducing the number of teenagers killed every year on London’s roads. Since the campaign was launched, the number of teenagers killed or seriously injured in traffic accidents has fallen by 50 per cent.
Ben Plowden, Director of Better Routes and Places at TfL, says: “I’m delighted with the continued success of the teen road safety campaign.
“Although the number of teenagers being killed or seriously injured on London’s roads has fallen dramatically over the past decade our work is not yet done.
“I’d like to say a big thank you to all the Road Safety Ambassadors who, recognising the importance of this campaign, have kindly donated their time to pass this important message on.
“TfL will never tire of reminding teenagers of these messages because, although the numbers are down on previous years, one death is one too many.”
Previous RSAs include recording artists Tinie Tempah, Eliza Doolittle and Tinchy Stryder.

Being Human stars Russell Tovey and Lenora Crichlow are taking part in Transport for London’s latest campaign to encourage teenagers to be safe on the Capital’s roads.
The pair, who star in BBC Three’s popular supernatural drama, are Road Safety Ambassadors for the 2011 run of TfL’s regular teen safety campaign which runs for the next four weeks. The campaign will use posters and online videos to encourage teenagers to ‘look out for their mates’ while they are out and about.
Other stars taking part in the campaign include rapper Wretch 32, Yasmin and Dels.
Launching the campaign Mayor of London Boris Johnson, said: “Any death on London’s roads is a tragedy. These stars are in the perfect position to reach out to their teenage fans and to help them realise that keeping themselves and their friends safe on the city’s roads is desperately important.”
Figures from TfL show the number of teenagers killed or seriously injured has fallen by almost 55 per cent since the campaign started in 2000.
Ben Plowden, TfL’s Director of Better Routes and Places, said he was “delighted with the continued success of the teen road safety campaign” but said there was still work to be done despite the ongoing decline in victim numbers.
