If there’s one thing that never fails to warm the cockles on an animation fan it’s the trailer for a brand new Aardman film! This new trailer is thankfully a return to their claymation roots, giving it a much more rough and ready look, although obviously since the early days of Wallace And Gromit when you could even see the finger prints of the animators imbedded into the characters, they have obviously come a long way since then but there’s no doubt that seeing plasticine stop motion has a genuine charm.
This is also a pure Aardman feature animation, no collaboration with DreamWorks, which gave us 2006's mediocre Flushed Away which utilised the look of Aardman film but gave it a 21st century polish by immortalising the characters in CG.
The new film , titled The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists, it’s quite an unusual title and the trailer alone doesn’t really give any indication of the plot but it does feature an amusing sea shanty introducing us to various characters and aspects of the film including Darwin, his monkey Bobo, a parrot called Eli, some nudists and a pair of dentures to name but a few.
It looks like a lot of fun and as Cilla Black would say, a lorra lorra laughs, and that’s exactly what you want from an Aardman film, like Pixar they have come to represent a shining gemstone in a crown of the film industry, they may not be as grand and epic as Pixar, but one can’t help but feel a little proud to be British when you think of Aardman, whose films are consistently funny, gentle, quirky and mad, resonating with both young and older generations and having the courage to push the medium of stop motion when most resort to computer effects. I must even admit to coming over all patriotic at seeing Nick Park at the Oscars in his little bow tie..bless him
With some fantastic voice acting from Hugh Grant, Martin Freeman, Brian Blessed, Russell Tovey, Imelda Staunton, and Jeremy Piven, Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists is going to be one to mark in the diary and is released March 30, 2012!
