Over at one of the online forums called DigitalSpy there is a discussion that has a number of pages and 45 people arguing over the fact that Russell Tovey may/may not be joining the Torchwood team when they allegedly relocate to America.
Personally, it would be nice to have Rusty in Torchwood because I would actually watch it then. As it is now, there have been times where Captain Jack's behaviour leaves me cold, as his character seems abrasive and aloof at times. I have watched some bits of Torchwood but not all of it. Russell would bring it some charm and warmth that it currently lacks in my opinion.
If Russell was brought into Torchwood as most people have suggested, then his character Midshipman Frame would be difficult to work around. He'd be replacing the former love interest of Captain Jack Harkness who was killed off...some people think Jack should mourn for a number of years before he finds someone else...fans can be so cruel!
To lose your lover be it man or woman is hard to come to terms with but being alone forever is not the ultimate answer to this most human of situations.
Then there is the fact that Russell's character Midshipman Frame is not human and comes from a planet called Stow/Sto/Stowe. The Titanic was a spaceship that was full of aliens and was hovering above Earth - on a Christmas theme cruise - when it got into difficulties. Why would a Midshipman from outer space want to settle with Jack Harkness on Earth? The crew on the Titanic were not very well explained...are they a race of stolen Earthlings or something similar? The WhoUniverse seems to be filled with humanoids...funny about that.
Click the following link to Page 1, to read this intense public discussion. Be warned some people have heated vitriolic exchanges over this issue. On the second page there are some who loudly decry Russell as an actor as well, which is pretty much unforgivable as far as I am concerned. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all - it's what I teach my kids at school! That's why here on my blog I just stick to the nice things. Jeez, I'm starting to sound like Tim Brook-Taylor in the Goodies!
“I’ve no idea if I’ll be in Torchwood, although it’s something I’d be open to if they asked me,” the actor said. “When it was on people suddenly were saying, ‘Oh you’re going to be the new Ianto,’ and I had no idea what that meant. I didn’t even realise Midshipman Frame was gay!”
He added: “I suppose Midshipman Frame could be the new Ianto. Or they might have just gone to the disabled toilets for a quickie and come out again and that’s it…”
