Stars get into the party habit as Sister Act musical premieres in Manchester
The Diary by Dianne Bourne
October 05, 2011
Famous faces got into the party habit as they headed to the red carpet premiere of Sister Act the musical in Manchester.
They included Coronation Street stars Julie Hesmondhalgh (Hayley Cropper), Jennie McAlpine (Fiz Stape), Antony Cotton (Sean Tully) and new girl Catherine Tyldesley (Eva Price) who dazzled on the red carpet in her black dress teamed with bright red heels.
Also heading to the opening night at the Opera House were Being Human actor Russell Tovey, Hollyoaks stars Nicole Barber-Lane, Rob Norbury, Miles Higson and Lucy Dixon and former X Factor star Rowetta.
The show stars ex-Coronation Street actress Denise Black as Mother Superior - but she threw off her nun's habit after wowing audiences in the new touring production of the show – to show off her inner rock chick at the star-studded after-party.
Denise headed straight from the premiere of the new touring production at the Opera House to entertain VIP guests at the bash held over at the Renaissance Hotel on Deansgate.
And, in rather stark contrast to her saintly Mother Superior role, Denise performed at the bash with her band – cheekily called Loose Screw.
Denise, who played Ken Barlow's lover Denise Osbourne in Corrie, was cheered on at the premiere by a host of the soap's stars past and present.
Antony Cotton, an old friend of Denise's, said: “If you want a rip roaring foot-stamping, thigh-slapping night out then it’s right there.
“It was rammed to the rafters for opening night and it was absolutely loved.”
It was certainly an excitable audience – with huge cheers ringing out when the audience spotted the stars taking their seats, particularly for Corrie favourite Antony.
He laughed afterwards: “That was lovely, my mum was there with me and she was absolutely delighted. I think we were all up for it. There was lots of up for it women and they all had a ball. It was nice to be there to support the cast.”
Meanwhile there were three generations of Corrie's Brooke Vincent's family heading onto the red carpet with her mum Nicola and nana Joan – who faced the flashing bulbs of the paparazzi for the first time.
Joan, 64, from Droylsden, said: “When Brooke told me she could get me a ticket for Sister Act I was over the moon. But my heart was beating so fast when we went on the red carpet.”
The after-party also saw a reunion for old pals Michael Starke, who plays the Monsignor in Sister Act, and former Hollyoaks and Two Pints of Lager star Will Mellor.
And Will, whose known for his own silky vocal skills, was full of praise for the show.
He said: “It's the feelgood show of the year, if you don't enjoy this show you are not living. It makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. “I'd love to do more musicals, especially when you go and watch something as good as this.”
MrStevieWebb: I'll round it up with this. @TomParsonsMusic @Julie_Atherton Myself and @russelltovey
