In 2000 a young Russell Tovey appeared in Hope & Glory a BBC show set in a school where Lenny Henry played the principal and Amanda Redman played the female lead.
Russell Tovey was cast as the teenage lead for one episode. He played Gary Bailey in episode 2 of season 2.
The plot is that Gary and his brother have taken responsibility for their family as their parents have departed leaving them destitute...Gary is caught stealing at school to keep them in food. Gary is a sad and lonely child and seems very distant. After reprimands from the principal that Gary might be banned from the soccer team, another staff member discovers the secret and tries to help the family. Gary gets to finally play soccer and then scores the winning goal for his school.
