As the only cast member to be part of Being Human since the original pilot, Russell Tovey has watched the show grow in cult status – and he’s loved every minute of it, as he explains to Paul Simpson on the set of the third season.
Do you like the 1970s feel of the group’s new home, Honolulu Heights?
Yeah – it’s a massive set, and gives the show a lot more scope. We’re in Cardiff as well, which is great for the story because you feel fresher in a new environment. There’s new things to explore, new props in the house and new furniture to jump over!
What’s been the biggest challenge for you playing George?
Keeping him fresh, I suppose, keeping them all alive! I think that challenge really lies with the writers – we just get given the material and we bring that to life.
We’ve been really blessed that new guest writers have come in, and Toby still has these incredible ideas and this story arc you can connect to. The hard work is done by them. If it was us having to write it, I think we’d all be panicking now – we would have run out of ideas! But they keep going.
How much input do you get?
I think we put ideas in about what we’d like to appear, and what we’d like to do, and Toby can take them or ignore them… normally he ignores them! They know how we are with our characters, and they write for us. A lot of writers say when they have the actor in mind, they find it easier to write.
Are we likely to see Herrick again – and what will that mean for George?
Herrick does come back, but he doesn’t appear for the first few episodes. That’s terrifying for George. The thing is with this world, nothing is the end. So when he appears, it sends George back into shock. He’s killed this guy, ripped his head off, and there is he again, no scars, absolutely fine. How do you explain that? It defies all laws of anything.
It’s a bizarre situation when Herrick comes back. Everything gets explained – but that’s spoilers…
You’re surrounded by more werewolves this season…
Brilliant, isn’t it? Finally, more werewolves! I think because this season George and Nina really settle into each other and they know they’ve got each other, they feel more open to exploring, and because she ends up pregnant, we open ourselves to more werewolf people.
Before, George didn’t want anything to do with them: he transforms, but he’s human the rest of the time. But now he wants to know everything because they’re going to bringing this wolf cub up – or a baby up, whatever it is. They want to know all the folklore, everything that is to do with it.
It’s great to have more werewolves around. It’s good for the fans, just to see that opening up, and good for us to have Robson Greene and Michael Socha around, because they’re lots of fun. About time – we’ve had a million vampires!
Have you been watching other werewolf films, like the recent Benicio del Toro movie?
I’ve not seen The Wolfman yet, but right back in the day, I did all the research for George. The thing is, he’s so different to any werewolf that’s been depicted in TV, books, or film, you make it your own.
A lot of the stuff in the transformations is a homage to An American Werewolf in London, but when it comes down to character, it’s all Toby’s doing.
Has George stopped looking for a cure?
Yes. All he’s ever wanted to be is normal, have kids and be in love with someone. Now he’s met someone. They’re as normal as their normal can be. Yes, he’s given her the curse but she’s accepted it now. They’re both aware of each other, they both look after each other.
She gets pregnant, they’re about to have kids, they’ve both got jobs again – they’ve got the condition under control with the basement in the house where they can change. Life feels great.
In that vein, Mitchell kind of gets left on the wayside a bit, because suddenly everything that George has been striving for is happening, and Mitchell’s wondering, “Where do I stand now?” That’s where Mitchell’s story goes off, and it’s much harder this year. We’ve always been dragging him back to humanity, and now it feels like George is saying, “Mitchell you’ve got to sort yourself out now.”
Are the characters settled down?
Once Annie comes back, they feel that they’re sorted and life’s great – which is a positive for George and Nina, and Annie… but for Mitchell, it’s a negative that life is so great because what has he really got going for him? He always has to destroy. The animal in him always has to come out, and he has to serve that.
What’s the big bad for this year?
It comes from within… Tricks end up being played amongst the group from an outside influence. People are being brainwashed into believing one thing.
Mitchell killing the people on the train is another huge storyline: will anybody discover? It’s the big news story, like at the time of the Ipswich Prostitute Murders. You see it every day but you’d never guess that your friend or your partner was responsible. That’s a cloud that looms over the whole series for everyone – it’s about whether that discovery comes out.
What’s the coolest thing about playing the part?
It’s such a cool show. The storylines are so brilliant, so is the writing. As an actor, I want to play every emotion, so in the space of an episode I’m naked, laughing, crying, being stupid, over the top and earnest. I like the emotional arc: it’s great to play as an actor. Now it’s the third series and it’s got a big following – it’s nice to keep going back and doing it when people are behind it.
It’s been a massive part of my life. It’s all positive feelings: it’s a dream, really, because when you get involved with a project you want people to watch it and like it. With this show they do. That’s awesome.
